On July 9, 2018, the work report meeting of the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Material Genetic Engineering and the first meeting of the Academic Committee was held at the University of Science and Technology Beijing. Well-known academicians from the United States, Canada, Japan, and China from the field of materials science participated in the meeting. Cao Guoying, Deputy Director of the Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization of the Ministry of Science and Technology; Ye Maolin, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education; Wu Guilong, Secretary of the Party Committee of University of Science and Technology Beijing; and Yang Renshu, President of the University, attended the meeting. Wu Aixiang, Vice President of the University, presided over the appointment ceremony of the Academic Committee members.
On behalf of the University, Yang Renshu expressed warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to participating leaders and experts. Yang said that the school attaches great importance to, and actively promotes, the construction of advanced innovation centers. Since its approval in October of the previous year, the Center has reached numerous achievements in team building, scientific research, and scientific and technological services. He thus requested input from the academicians for comments and suggestions in terms of the future development and planning of the Center.
Cao Guoying pointed out in his speech that material and genetic technologies will have an important impact on the development of materials science and other disciplines in the future and will help to promote new paradigms for future disciplines. His hope is that the Academic Committee will fully play its guiding role and promote the development of materials science in the new era.
Ye Maolin expressed congratulations on the convening of the meeting on behalf of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education. He emphasized that, as the only advanced innovation center in Beijing, the Center’s establishment is in line with the positioning of Beijing as the science and technology innovation center of China. He further iterated the expectation that the Center will secure a global position in the field of materials science and that the University will integrate the development of the Center, the discipline, and corresponding talent to push the boundaries of development of materials science in a new era.
Yang Renshu issued certificates of appointment to the 21 members of the Academic Committee that participated in the meeting, including academician and foreign Director, Gregory Olson; academician and Director, Chen Liquan; academicians and Deputy Directors, Xie Jianxin and Wang Haizhou; and other members such as academicians John Allison, Iwata Shuichi, and Federico Rosei.
Academicians Gregory Olson and Chen Liquan delivered speeches on behalf of the Committee. Gregory Olson explained that material and genetic engineering is important for material development and that he would fully support the construction of the Center. Chen Liquan expressed the hope that the Center could effectively utilize available resources, allow its strengths to prosper, and contribute to the striding development of new material technologies.
Thereafter, Chen Liquan presided over the first meeting of the Academic Committee. Academician Xie Jianxin, Director of the Center, reported to the guests on the main progress of the construction and structuring, operation management, team building, personnel training, and scientific research, as well as subsequent plans of the Center. Professor Qu Xuanhui, Deputy Director of the Center, reported on research progress in the field of materials and genetic engineering at the University. Academic Committee members discussed the construction of the Center and provided guidance and suggestions.
Wu Guilong made the concluding speech. It was his hope that the members of the Center pay close attention to the suggestions of the Academic Committee, and continue to strengthen exploration in areas such as attracting top international talent, transforming research and development models, enhancing cross-disciplinary technological innovation capability, and ensuring innovative talent training models. He hoped that the Center would seize this opportunity and contribute to the innovation efforts and development of the University.
